The BCS Computer Show 2006 begins at the Bhasani Novo Theatre in the Dhaka city on September 17 with the theme — ICT for poverty alleviation.
The Science and Information Communication Technology (ICT) minister, Abdul Moyeen Khan, will inaugurate the six- day 14th computer show to be organised by the Bangladesh Computer Samity (BCS) in association with the ICT ministry.
The France ambassador in Dhaka, Jacques-André Costilhes, Japanese ambassador in Dhaka, Masayuki Inoue, and the GrameenPhone head of marketing, Rubaba Dowla Matin, will be present as special guests.
Grameen Phone, Hewlett- Packard and Intel are the sponsors of the show, the organisers told a press conference on Wednesday. Seventy-two national and international ICT companies, including Apple Computer, Gigabyte Technology Company Limited, Intel, Speed Technology and Engineering Limited, Sun Computer Limited, Impace Communication, Global Brand Private Limited will demonstrate their recent technology and devices at the fair in 85 stalls and 26 pavilions, they added.
The price of an entry ticket has been fixed at Tk 20. The school students, however, will enjoy free entrance, said the organisers adding that the visitors of the Bhasani Novo Theatre will be able to move around the show.
They said the show would demonstrate how the ICT devices could change the life of poor section of people by giving them update information. Different kinds of soft and hard tools of computer connectivity will be the main attractions of the show this year, they added.
‘Once personal computer and its hardware were the main attractions of BCS Computer Show, but the ICT enthusiastic people will now learn and discover more about the usage and connectivity through computer at the show,’ said the samity director Mainul Islam. The samity president, Faizullah Khan, said visitors would get the real experience of broadband connectivity through fibre optic in the free internet browsing zone.
Besides, the visitors would get wireless internet connections as a result of the wireless fidelity connection on the fair premises, he added. The visitors will also get the experience of IP-TV, video on demand, gaming, fast system switch, radio listening, audio file sharing through broadband internet connection, he said. ICT companies will offer discount, gifts with their products, said the convenor of the show organising committee, Nazrul Islam Milon.
He said for the first time BCS Computer Show would arrange computer general knowledge and quiz competition for the children.
A number of seminars will also be held and IT experts will take part in it.
The topics of the seminars include free and open source software; development sources, Impact of SEMEWE4 in Bangladesh; Language research work in ICT; prospects and barriers of broadband connectivity; prospects of telecentres and information system audit.
